When the clock strikes midnight on New Year’s Eve and the new year arrives, we often find ourselves making resolutions for the year to come. While we did love providing New Years Resolution ideas and how to stick with them, another method that can help keep you centered is creating a vision board. For the uninitiated, you might be unsure what a vision board is, or how to even start one. Here’s a basic rundown of how you can make your own 2022 vision board and get one step closer to accomplishing your goals for the new year.

What is a vision board?

A vision board is a visual representation of what you want to accomplish in the next year. For example, if your goal is to travel, perhaps you’ll include images and postcards from the place that you want to travel. Or if your goal is to read more books, include meaningful quotes, images of books, authors, or anything else that relates to that goal.

Isn’t a vision board the same thing as a mood board?

Not exactly. A mood board is used for planning events and aesthetics, such as designing parties or decorating a room. A vision board is more focused on your life’s overall direction and goals.

Got it! So what do I include in a vision board?

The good thing about a vision board is that there is no one right way to do one. Some people will create a vision board geared towards one specific goal (like travel) or it’ll be a board that covers a variety of topics, like travel, career goals, family goals, etc. Your board can be as narrow or as expansive as you want it to be, just as long as it serves as a visual reminder of what you aim to accomplish.

Images are the most popular choice for vision boards, but you can also include quotes and phrases that inspire you to pursue your goal.

Where do I get my images and quotes?

Magazines are a popular place to start, since you can sift through and physically cut out and paste whatever you find. You can also use images that you find online from sites like Pinterest and Instagram. Then, cut them out and paste them to a poster of your choosing. The important thing is that you place your vision board somewhere visible; it won’t do much good in motivating you if you can’t see it!

Do I have to make a physical vision board?

You don’t have to, but again, the point is to create something that you’ll regularly see to inspire you to pursue those goals. If you don’t want to get your hands sticky with glue or you’re not feeling as crafty, you can always create an online vision board. Pinterest is popular for mood boards, but it can also be used to create your 2022 vision board. The website Canva is another go-to of mine since it offers thousands of free images you can use and it’s a simple to learn design tool. If you make a digital vision board with one of these sources, either print them out and put them somewhere you’ll see it, or set it as a screensaver/desktop so you have a constant reminder of where you want to go in life.

Do vision boards actually work?

Well, they certainly don’t hurt! When you put the time and effort into sitting down and thinking about your hopes and dreams, you’re bound to feel more motivated to actually pursue those goals. Having visual reminders of what you hope to see and do is a great motivator on both the good days and not-so-good to pursue your goals and plot out practical steps in accomplishing them. So, as we go into 2022, try your hand at a vision board to set a course for your future.
